Red Lentil varieties:

Red Lentil (Whole/Football/Split Red): Red lentil is a bushy, annual shrub plant that is popular for its lens shaped seeds which are consumed as food in stew or other forms all over the world. These seeds have a vast range of colors from yellow to red-orange to green, brown and black and also have second highest levels of proteins and fiber after soybeans. The nutritious value of the seeds of the plant is quite high as it is rich in carbohydrates, fibers and proteins and that is why lentil is so popular among the vegetarian population of the world. Red lentil is widely used as human food. There are three types of Red lentil available in the market like whole red lentil, Football red lentil & Split red lentil. It is being used in health – conscious diets to promote general well being and reduce the risk of illness. Red lentil are high protein but low fat have a low glycemic index and are an excellent source of both soluble and insoluble fibre, complex carbohydrates, vitamins (especially B vitamins) and minerals (including potassium, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, copper, iron and zinc). Lentils are an inexpensive, high-quality source of protein, making them an invaluable part of a vegetarian diet. Since lentils are high in fibre, low in fat and are cholesterol free, they are an excellent heart-healthy food that may be beneficial to the prevention of coronary and cardiovascular disease.

Red lentil is marketed as whole seed, but 90-95 percent of red lentil is dehulled before it is eaten. The seed coat color can vary from brown to pale green, grey, brown, tan or black. Dehulled lentil is most commonly eaten as soup in the Mediterranean region or as dhal – a thick sauce in which spices are used as flavoring – in south Asia. Whole Red Lentil

Football Red Lentil

(without husk): Football red is Sortex de-husked Red lentils polished or unpolished with oil or water also known as a Masoor, are reddish-orange in color and are mainly used in soups, stews and casseroles. The Red Footballs are made from the Whole Red Lentil. The skin is removed from the lentil, leaving the inside portion of the seed whole (not split). The result is a beautiful intact, reddish-orange polished product. Football lentils are 3mm – 4.5mm in size and its very attractive to the Eastern part of the World countries like Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Middle east in Dubai, Kuwait, Bahrin, Iran and many more.

Split Red Lentil

Split red lentil is a Sortex Polished or unpolished which are made by splitting the whole red lentil. The skin is removed and the remaining reddish-orange seed is then split into two halves. Split lentils are very popular to Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Jordan markets and other countries as well.
